Search crawlers move slowly (to avoid too much server load), sometimes they're on their own mission finding new content - depending on the amount of new content if hasn't come across or content change this can take a while.

Sometimes they will tail a visitor that went through their search engine - you can see it jumping from page to page following an actual user and sitting on the same page timing how long they stay around / page views / most popular pages / loading times / etc. They leave when the visitor clicks through to another site or closes the webpage.

Google is by far my favourite, it visits multiply times daily on my sites for hours on end (sometimes you even get your very own crawler which comes back daily).
